Thanks to some good friends , I was finally able to see "Yamato Resurrection" on DVD on New Years Eve, so the movie is still pretty fresh on my mind. Was wondering what others thought of it. I really enjoyed it a lot. Watching trailers for the film, I was excited about Yamato's design but I wasn't sold on the character desigins. However, once I started watching the movie they really grew on me. The original characters all looked familiar enough that I instantly recognized them (except Tokugawa, he's really grown up!) The alien alliance headed by the SUS was a nice change up I think to the standard Yamato villains. I watched the movie using my video projector and huge screen so I was pretty blown away with the images produced by the SUS's massive submersible ship and the black holes. The classical music worked in some places and not so much in others, but overall it didn't bother me. Here's hoping the sequel gets made, I miss Yuki.

Good solid picture, sweeping epic space vistas, great mix of CG and traditional animation, and they got us in and out of there in not too much over two hours. Desslar and much of the original crew are missed, but at the same time, I'm glad the movie resisted the temptation to wallow in nostalgia and instead went out and claimed its own territory.

I've said it before, but it's still true: I like the movie more every time I see it. Naturally, it's the movie I would have made (Star Blazers Rebirth is the movie I would have made) but what did get made set the table for a lot more to come. It didn't become the blockbuster everyone hoped it would be, but video sales were brisk and the film should get a second life this year when the director's cut comes out. Can a string of moderate successes add up to a big one? Don't know. But if they want to take it to series or OVA all the hard work is done; everything is reusable and thus already paid for.

It's indeed one of the best 2000s Anime films I've seen, although I was disappointed at first about Leiji Matsumoto's uninvolvement in making this movie, but it has a good plot and amazing ship designs. I'm glad I got to see it at Fantasia 2010 Festival because we don't know when or if it will get a region 1 DVD release.

Loved the movie, the sweeping vistas, et cetera. I hope a sequel gets made...I want to see Desslar again, and I want to see Yuki again. (In fact, it would be cool if she turned up on Desslar's flagship!)

Overall, it's a fine piece of work. Has a properly epic feel, keeps you on the edge of your seat, and an ending that has the Yamato's crew winning the day without the help of a blonde space goddess. I do have a quibble with the new uniform design though. They lack the 'balanced' style of the originals, which it seems most of the crew (Kodai, the fighter pilots, and the third bridge crew) still wore. Would have preferred seeing everyone wearing the classic look. The Alfee have done really good work in the past, but their take on the main theme song didn't (IMHO) measure up to that track record. Perhaps the director's cut will put the Sasaki version back in, or they can find a chorus to give the song a depth that matches the rest of the film's scope. Those really are the only negatives I can find with the film. Except perhaps that, even with the little screentime he got, Sanada should still have spent some time in the makeup chair
